Imagine stepping onto your patio and picking fresh olives from your very own tree. The Arbequina Olive Tree makes this dream a reality, bringing the charm and bounty of the Mediterranean right to your home. Originally from Spain, this olive variety is beloved for its delicious small olives packed with healthy, antioxidant-rich oils. Now available to order online, the Arbequina Olive Tree lets you enjoy organic, home-grown olives – perfect for adding to salads, charcuterie boards, or even pressing into your own extra-virgin olive oil.
This compact olive tree features slender, gray-green leaves that glimmer in the sun, giving any space a tranquil, Old-World ambiance. It stays evergreen year-round, so it will continue to beautify your garden or home even in winter. In spring, you may notice tiny cream-colored blossoms that lead to green olives. As they ripen, the olives transition from green to purple-black, often in batches – meaning you can enjoy multiple mini harvests. A mature Arbequina can yield up to 20 pounds of olives per year, offering plenty to share with friends or try your hand at curing and brining your own olives. Plus, each fruit is a little taste of the Mediterranean – buttery and smooth, with a hint of nuttiness when pressed for oil.
Beyond its tangible rewards, the Arbequina Olive Tree carries a sense of history and symbolism. Olive trees have been symbols of peace and prosperity since ancient times – owning one is like keeping a living piece of history in your yard. Despite its exotic allure, this tree is surprisingly easy to grow. It’s self-pollinating, which means a single tree will produce fruit on its own. It’s also adaptable – plant it in your garden if you live in USDA Zones 7–10, or keep it potted on your balcony if you’re in a cooler climate. Many gardeners in northern zones grow Arbequina olives in containers and simply bring them indoors during frosty weather. Thanks to its drought tolerance, the Arbequina shrugs off dry spells once established, and it isn’t fussy about soil types as long as there’s good drainage. Whether you have acres of land or a small apartment balcony, this tree will thrive with minimal care, rewarding you with beauty and flavorful fruit.
Bring a touch of Tuscany or Catalonia to your own space with this versatile olive tree. Its gnarled trunk and willowy branches lend rustic character, and it can live for decades (even centuries in optimal conditions), becoming a treasured heirloom plant. If you’re looking to add a unique fruit tree to your collection, the Arbequina Olive Tree is a winner. From its fragrant spring flowers to the excitement of harvesting your very own olives, every season brings something to appreciate. And with our convenient online ordering and home delivery, it’s never been easier to start growing your own olives. Plant your Arbequina Olive Tree and enjoy the Mediterranean lifestyle right at home!

Planting & Care Guide
Growing an Arbequina Olive Tree is simple and rewarding. Here are some quick tips to help your new tree thrive:
- Sunlight: Plant or place your olive tree in full sun for best results. Aim for at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day. (Indoors, choose the sunniest window – a south or west-facing window is ideal.)
- Watering: Water deeply when the top inch or two of soil is dry. For new plants, water about once per week to help establish roots. Once established, allow the soil to dry out between waterings – olives don’t like to sit in soggy soil. The Arbequina is drought-tolerant, so it can handle occasional dry spells, but regular watering during the first year will help it grow faster.
- Soil: Use a well-draining soil mix. Olives prefer loamy or sandy soil that doesn’t stay waterlogged. If your native soil is clay-heavy, mix in sand or gravel to improve drainage. A neutral to slightly alkaline soil pH (around 7.0–8.5) is perfect, but this tree is adaptable. Good drainage is the most important factor.
- Container vs. In-Ground: The Arbequina Olive Tree thrives in both containers and the ground. In-ground, it can eventually reach 15–20 feet tall and 10–15 feet wide over many years (typically around 8–12 feet in most home landscapes with pruning). In a pot, it will stay more compact (often 4–6 feet tall) and its size can be easily controlled with pruning. If you live in a zone colder than 7, keep your tree in a large pot so you can relocate it indoors during freezing weather. Outdoor planting is best for Zones 7–10, where the climate suits year-round growth.
- Hardiness (USDA Zones 7–10): Arbequina Olive Trees are hardy in Zones 7 through 10. This means they can tolerate winter lows down to roughly 10–20°F when planted outside. If you’re in Zone 6 or colder, simply grow your olive tree in a container and move it indoors or to a protected area when temperatures dip below 20°F. Indoors, maintain a cool room temperature (above 40°F) during winter dormancy. With the right care, even northern gardeners can enjoy fresh olives by bringing the tree inside for winter.
Additional Tips: Fertilize lightly in spring with a balanced fertilizer to boost growth (optional, as olives are not heavy feeders). Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain your desired shape and to remove any dead or crossing branches. (Bonus: Olive wood is beautiful and aromatic – trimmed twigs can even be used in BBQ smokers for a hint of flavor!) With proper care, your Arbequina Olive Tree will reward you with vigorous growth and fruit.

FAQ
Can I grow this tree indoors?
Yes, the Arbequina Olive Tree can be grown indoors as long as it gets plenty of light. It’s a popular indoor specimen because of its manageable size. Place it by the sunniest window you have (southern or western exposure is best). If you can provide 6+ hours of direct light (or supplement with a grow light), your olive tree should thrive indoors. Many people keep their Arbequina in a pot, outdoors on a deck or patio during warm months, and then bring it inside during winter. It will continue to live year-round and even produce olives in a container with the right care.
Does it ship potted, or bare-root?
We ship our Arbequina Olive Trees in their pots with soil. That means your tree arrives already established in its growing medium, which greatly reduces transplant shock. You won’t receive a bare-root plant; instead, it comes with its root system intact and soil around it. This way, you can either keep it in that pot for a short time or transfer it to a larger pot or into the ground when it arrives. (Be sure to water it when it arrives, and give it a day or two in partial shade to recover from shipping before planting in full sun.)
Do I need a second tree for pollination?
No, you only need one! The Arbequina is self-pollinating, so a single tree will produce olives on its own. The flowers are perfect (having both male and female parts) and will set fruit without another olive tree nearby. However, like many fruiting plants, having a second olive tree of the same or another variety can sometimes increase your overall yield. But it’s completely optional – you’ll get plenty of olives with just one Arbequina Olive Tree.
How long until I get olives, and what do I do with them?
Patience is rewarded! Many Arbequina Olive Trees begin to produce fruit within 1–2 years of planting (faster if you start with the 3-gallon size, which is more mature). It’s even possible you’ll see a few olives in the very first year. By the second or third year, you should enjoy a more robust harvest as the tree settles in. Once you pick your olives, you’ll need to cure them (olives are naturally bitter straight off the tree). Curing is easy – it involves soaking the olives in brine or salt for a few weeks to remove bitterness. After that, you’ll have delicious table olives! Alternatively, if you have a lot of olives, you can press them to make a small batch of homemade olive oil. Arbequina olives are known for making excellent, buttery oil. Either way, it’s an amazing experience to enjoy olives you grew yourself.
Can it survive cold winters?
Arbequina Olive Trees are cold-hardy to about 15–20°F once established, which corresponds to USDA Zone 7. In zones 8-10, you can plant it outside and it will handle the winters in those regions. If your area regularly drops below 15°F (Zone 6 or lower), you should plan to grow the tree in a container and bring it indoors or into a protected garage/greenhouse during the coldest months. The tree itself is evergreen but will slow down in cold weather. If exposed to freezing temperatures below its tolerance, it can suffer damage. So in chilly climates, treat it like a houseplant in winter and an outdoor patio plant in summer. With that strategy, people even in Zone 4 or 5 have successfully grown Arbequina Olives by overwintering them indoors.
What does “Alive & Fruiting Guarantee” mean?
It’s our special 1-year guarantee that your tree will live and bear fruit within the first year. We are confident in the quality and maturity of our Arbequina Olive Trees. If you care for your tree as directed and it fails to survive the year or doesn’t set any fruit by the end of the first growing season, just contact us. We will provide a free replacement tree. (Note: Even young olive trees often flower and fruit, but the number of olives will increase as the tree gets older and larger. Sometimes the first-year fruit is just a handful – but that’s still an exciting sign! Our guarantee ensures you’ll at least see that first step toward fruiting.)
